Welcome. It’s 2026. Time for the blog to come out of the dark ages. My blog has gone through a few iterations. It started as a blogspot in the last century, and eventually moved to a Wordpress site hosted on Bluehost. It was…fine. ok. Sluggish at times. Cumbersome. I decided to move it off of Bluehost and onto a static site generator and Firebase hosting, for performance, because I wanted to learn something new, and just because I was bored with it. Blogging isn’t really a thing any more, is it? I think at this point it’s mostly for myself, but hey, I count.

I’ve always gone for something a little bit quirky in styling. This time, I’m going for something a little more classic, yet still modern. I now have only a single sidebar (not two), which will continue to include “What I’m Reading” and “What I’m listening to”, since books & music are so important to me. I’ve also gone for a more aspirational home page, featuring a shot of Lanikai Beach where I live. The new version gets mid 90s on Lighthouse scores, so good for SEO. There’s a dark mode. This blog is created with Hugo and the wonderful Blowfish theme created by Nuno Coração, with significant modifications. It set in the Fraunces typeface.
I migrated from a Wordpress blog containing nearly 20 years of writings using SchumakerFM’s Wordpress-to-Hugo exporter. Thank you! I took inspiration from a few other blogs as well, thank you to the creators: Chester How, Olivier Ifrah, Ram Iyer, Gloria Lo.
I used Michael Welford’s shortcode for responsive images, which I hacked up to suit my needs and blog structure.
The book widgets are powered by a custom API to Bookship, my social reading app (or TBR, my reading tracker). If you want one for yourself, get in touch.
